Point of Sale Advertising of Tobacco
On 21 December 2004, The Tobacco Advertising and Promotion (Point of Sale) Regulations 2004 came into force.
These regulations ensure that advertising of tobacco is strictly controlled at the Point of Sale (gantry or display unit). The maximum area of advertising being restricted to A5 in size and it must include the Health warning and NHS Smoking Helpline telephone number.
No other advertisements are permitted in retail premises. Posters in shop windows, sandwich boards outside premises and awnings that carry a tobacco brand or logo that advertise tobacco are prohibited.
Vending Machines - No advertisement is permitted other than a picture of the product for sale, no larger than the surface area of the largest face of the packet, which must contain the identical Health warning.
