In February 2010, a national strategy on tobacco control was launched
A Smoke Free Future has three key priority areas of action:
- Stopping the inflow of young people recruited as smokers
- Motivating and assisting every smoker to stop
- Protecting families and communities from tobacco related harm
Smoke Free Hampshire and Isle of Wight is currently developing a tobacco control strategy for our area, which should be launched later in 2010
- Protecting children from tobacco – helping smokers to stay quit
The Health Act 2009 includes legislation to ban tobacco vending machines and prohibit the display of tobacco products at point of sale. All tobacco products must be removed from display from October 2011 in small retailers and from October 2013 in large retailers. The Government is currently consulting on the regulations.
- Stop Smoking Campaigns
Look out for the TV, radio advertising and poster campaigns encouraging smokers to quit through their local NHS Stop Smoking Services. For more information on all campaigns, visit www.smokefree.nhs.uk/resources/campaigns.
